We have been blessed to have our program grow over the past few years (since COVID) from around 60 participants to 160 participants last year. We are by far the largest youth wrestling program in York County. But with such large numbers in such a short amount of time, we have outgrown the "old" way of doing things and are looking to make some big changes this year. The goal of the changes are to try to improve the program for all that are participating. These decisions where made in conjunction with varsity coaches, former youth directors and by booster club members.
With close to 80 first year wrestlers last year, it was very hard to teach fundamental skills to brand new wrestlers while also trying to build additional skills with experienced ones. This leads us to our biggest change for the new season - first year wrestlers will be a part of a beginner practice that will only meet 8 times throughout the season on Sunday afternoon.
These wrestlers will NOT participate in the York County Youth Wrestling League. This will provide many (especially our youngest 5 and 6 year olds) an opportunity to build a strong foundation before trying to compete too early. ALL K - 6 grade first year wrestlers will be a part of this beginner group. This is also a great way for new wrestlers to see if they like wrestling and allow us to present it in a very non-stressful environment that allows for learning and fun.
By moving first year wrestlers into their own beginner level group, it will allow us to do much more with our novice wrestlers. These wrestlers are 2nd or third year wrestlers that know the basics and are ready to start gearing up for competition. This group formerly had brand new wrestlers as part of it and restricted what we were able to accomplish during practice. We think that this will help those 2nd year wrestlers take that next step and also allow smaller group size to create a better coach to kid ratio.
The advanced group will then be made up of mainly 3rd+ year wrestlers that have learned the basics, demonstrated their ability to keep their composure on the mat and are ready to learn more advanced moves and do more live wrestling and drilling. Again, with the smaller group size we are hoping to also better accommodate our most experienced wrestlers and provide additional differentiation to the practice.
Based on previous numbers, we anticipate around 35 first year 5 and 6 year olds brand new wrestlers. These kids will be in a group of their own and practice once a week on Sunday afternoon (from 3:00pm to 4:00pm in the high school wrestling room) for 8 weeks from the end of November through beginning of February (Some Sundays are skipped because of holidays and tournaments - see below for exact dates).
Although there may be a handful of kids in this age group that can "handle" wrestling competitions their first year, we want to build a strong foundation before throwing kids out on the mat. This also provides an opportunity for those that are unsure of wrestling to build their confidence or decide that wrestling might not be the sport for them. This decision was not made lightly and we believe that it will pay dividends in the long run for your child and the program.
Although they will not compete in the York County Wrestling League either, we plan on holding some kind of inter-squad competition towards the end of the season to give these kids a taste of what it would be like if they continue wrestling next year and a chance for parents to see what a match looks like.
Again, the goal of reorganizing our program like this is to build a strong foundation in order to be successful in the long run. The kids in this group could still choose to compete in novice tournaments at the end of the year if they think their child is ready to compete.
Similar to the 5 and 6 year old beginner group, we expect around 30 brand new wrestlers in this age group. Because these kids tend to be more mature than the younger kids, they will be a group of their own that will also practice Sunday afternoon (4:15pm - 5:15pm in the high school wrestling room) for 8 weeks from the end of November through beginning of February (Some Sundays are skipped because of holidays and tournaments - see below for exact dates).
Even more-so than the 5 and 6 year old first year wrestlers, it is super beneficial for these 7 - 12 year old first year wrestlers to gain experience before going out on the mat. In some instances, they would have to wrestle kids that have been wrestling for 3+ years. Before "throwing them to the wolves" out there on the mat, getting a year of experience beforehand will help build their skills and confidence.

This group will consist of mostly 2nd year wrestlers and maybe some of those 3rd year wrestlers that still need to work on fundamentals. This group should be those that want to come to practice, want to wrestle, want to learn and want to get better.
This group WILL participate in the York County Youth Wrestling League and one of the goals of practices will be to get these kids ready for competition and help them find success on the mat.
They will practice twice a week (1 hour each) on Tuesday and Thursday evening (from 5:30pm - 6:30pm at York Township Elementary) from late November to mid to late February. (See below for exact dates.)
When beginning competition, we will pair wrestlers with others that are the same ability level and experience when possible.
This will consist primarily of our 3rd+ year wrestlers that have proven themselves to understand the fundamentals, show their composure on the mat and demonstrate that they are ready to take things to the next level.
